Nowhere is this mechanical alignment clearer than in the early career of George Croghan. Before emerging as the dominant Indian trader, land speculator, and Crown Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Pennsylvania backcountry, Croghan operated out of the core mercantile and factoring community of Dublin. Supported by a sophisticated web of credit, banking drafts, and kinship alliances, he established the logistics network that subsequently secured the western frontier passages for incoming merchant cadres. The scotch irish buffer we read about in history books began when Luke Gardiner a married Anne Stewart viscounts mountjoy in 1711. Peter and John Gardner arrived to the hempfields at Mt Joy and Donegal on paper in 1718 and begin the process of erecting America's first automated hemp mills in 1720. The Infrastructure George Croghan and waves of ulsterman like John and William Gardner who arrived aboard Captain William Robinsons Brig Cleveland in 1745 to protect.
The Transatlantic Corporate Pipeline
The deployment of this capital followed a structured, three-stage logistical pathway that converted urban European assets into strategic frontier outposts:
1. The Dublin Mercantile Runway (1739–1741)
- Location: Parishes of St. Michan & St. Audoen, Dublin to Castle Street Banking House
- Family Anchor: Kinship ties to the Callender merchant cadre and Nicholas Byrne.
- Dublin Registry of Deeds (Book 105, p. 314): Croghan liquidates residual leaseholds and executes a sweeping Letter of Attorney to recover outstanding debts.
- PRONI D/1118/3 & NAI Chancery: Obtains commercial credit and foreign exchange drafts discounted through Luke Gardiner's Castle Street Bank, backed by Dublin linen/timber paper.
2. The Commodity Advance at Philadelphia (Summer 1741)
- Location: Wharves of Water Street, Philadelphia
- Consignees & Factors: William Callender (Quaker merchant) & Jeremiah Warder.
- Commercial Mechanism: Dublin bills of exchange converted into Indian trade cargo including Stroud broadcloths, French duffels, brass kettles, gunpowder, and Barbados rum.
3. The Blue Mountain Advance Sink: Croghan’s Gap (Autumn 1741–1744)
- Location: Pennsboro Township, Cumberland Valley (Sterrett’s Gap / Silver Spring)
- Logistics: Sits at the primary mountain pass leading into the unpatented Juniata & Ohio basins. Establishes packhorse staging corrals, tanyards, and peltry warehouses.
- Network Alignment: Functions as the commercial and intelligence outpost directly receiving Capt. William Robinson, John Gardner, and William Gardner off the Brig Cleveland (1745).
Croghan did not arrive in North America as a penniless wanderer. As demonstrated by the memorials of the Dublin Registry of Deeds and the early ledgers preserved in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP), he systematically mobilized liquid capital by alienating urban tenements, executing powers of attorney to clear Irish accounts, and securing trade credits through transatlantic merchant-bankers. This capital was immediately deployed upon the Pennsylvania frontier in 1741, creating the forward staging ground at Croghan's Gap (Sterrett's Gap) that anchored the entire transit network moving up the Susquehanna watershed and over the Blue Ridge.
