Apply Sir William’s Key™ and the whole thing flips.
Suddenly the orthographic variants — More, Moore, Mohr, Mour, Mewor, Jno Mour, Jon Moore — stop being “scribal errors” and start looking like exactly what they are: medieval shell-company encryption. The same trick the Gardinarius Cohort used for 540 years to keep the skim moving while the Crown and Church chased ghosts.
And when you run the Key on Sir John More, the father of the famous Thomas, the Mirror Ledger lights up.
Milk Street wasn’t random real estate. The will mentions “my messuages in Milk Street, late of John Harpur, wool merchant.” Harpur — Alice’s first husband — was tied directly into the early Clothworkers’ rolls alongside our own fullers and skinners (Guildhall MS 4647, 1480). Same Milk Street that sat cheek-by-jowl with the Unicorn Tavern, the same wharfs our factors used for Cotswold bales. Same northern wool valve that shows up in the Chester customs rolls where a “Jno Mour, judge” is quietly overseeing dues right around the time our Alderman Richard Cardyner was skimming the same trade.
That’s not coincidence. That’s the legal arm of the syndicate doing its job.
Run the variants and the records stop looking scattered. A 1475 Husting enrollment shows “Jon Moore, serjeant-at-law” witnessing Gardiner property reversions in Soper Lane. A 1480 Exchequer plea has “Jno Mour” clearing wool tolls in the north — the same year our people were moving undervalued shipments through the same ports. By 1485, when the putsch went down at Bosworth, Sir John More is sitting on the King’s Bench hearing cases that conveniently clear the right skinners and merchants.
He wasn’t an outsider watching the merchant coup. He was the fixer making sure the paperwork stayed clean.
The Mores didn’t need 147 name variants like we did. They played tighter. But the Key still pulls the thread: legal protection, property safe-houses, Calais audits, and the quiet overlap with our own Harpur–Gardyner–Clothworker network. Thomas More’s Utopia even takes a sly swing at wool enclosures — the same pasture grabs our syndicate was running in Exning and the Welsh Marches.
In other words, the sainted Thomas came from the same shadow ledger we’ve been mapping since 2015. His father wasn’t just a judge. He was the man who made sure the skim stayed protected when the Tudors took the throne.
Sir William's Key doesn’t create connections. It just stops letting the gatekeepers hide them.
